Dorothy's TimeWarp

Saw an interesting blog post over on Cheryl's blog that I thought would be fun to carry over in here being as there hasn't been many blog posts lately. It's called TimeWarp. What you do is take this and do your own time warp, making a new blog post and putting your name on it. Sound like fun? Here it goes:

TIMEWARP
TEN YEARS AGO - Ten years ago, I moved into this house I'm living now. I had just started working at a pizza joint (miraculously I'm still there part-time) and also the same year, I met my current BF. I say current because he's on my shit list right now * see post *. I didn't own a computer and actually did things like enjoy life, shoot the breeze, watched TV, played with my then cocker, Chelsea. Son was still living here, along with my Daughter's BF (why I did that was beyond me).
FIVE YEARS AGO - Five years ago, I learned how to use the computer and made my first website, The Writer's Life. I also became a published author for the first time in the ebook format. It was a children's book called NO MORE GOOSEBERRY PIE.
ONE YEAR AGO - One year ago, my second book is published. ROMANCING THE SOUL became my book available in both print and ebook format. Cool thing that was. I also became a syndicated relationship columnist and SOUL MATE EXPERT. Tres cool.
YESTERDAY - Yesterday was the day from hell. I had off and all I did was sulk because BF (why I'm still mad at him) and Daughter can't go to a booksigning with me that's five hours away and I'm going to have to cancel it.
5 SNACKS I ENJOY - Hm...definitely cheez whiz sandwiches, steamed shrimp (yeah, I do snack on this!), Caramel Popcorn, Cake-Like Cookies (forget the name of them) and rice (I know, I'm weird).
5 THINGS I'D DO WITH 100 MILLION DOLLARS - Buy a house in California and another in Tennessee (oops, that's two), stand on the street and hand out dollars to those who need it, buy a laptop, and put the rest away so my kids will never have to work another day in their lives.
5 PLACES I'D RUN AWAY TO - Pigeon Hole, Tennessee (I told you I'm weird), Bahamas, Burbank, California, Paris, France and anywhere in the mountains as long as it was a little cabin in the woods away from everything!
5 THINGS I'D NEVER WEAR - tongue rings, thongs (ouch!), granny drawers, see-through blouses, and bridal dresses (a little inside humor there with everything going on).
5 FAVORITE TV SHOWS - I love Lucy, The Golden Girls, America's Funniest Videos, Blind Date, Cheater.
5 BIGGEST JOYS - to see my son get better, to see my daughter graduate nursing school, a publishing contract from a NY house, fan mail and to get BF to put the cover up when he uses the bathroom.
5 FAVORITE TOYS - my computer, my porcelain Shirley Temple Doll, Fart Machine (okay, it's not mine, it's BF's, but it's real cool to play with at work and watch the customer's expressions. Come on, you know you want to do it, too), Trivial Pursuit and my digital camera.
5 FINE FOLKS WHO CAN NOW CONSIDER THEMSELVES TAGGED! - The Writersville Gang and anyone else who would like to play!

What a fun idea! OK, for what it's worth, here's what was going on in my world--then and now.

TEN YEARS AGO - I was writing for magazines, was a member of a small local writers' group and I was the "most published" one of the bunch, but it wasn't my dream. My dream was to get my books published, so I kept writing--and writing--and writing.

NINE YEARS AGO - I know this wasn't in there, but that was the year my husband lost his leg and our life changed drastically. Our dreams of retiring and traveling came to an abrupt halt. Still, I kept writing.

FIVE YEARS AGO - In April, I got a phone call from a publisher who said not one, but TWO of my historicals had been accepted for publication. DUNNOTTAR was the first one, and in just over a month it was the best-selling Scottish novel on Amazon.com. About 3 months later, MARYLEBONE was released. I was on my way. IF ONLY somebody had told me that I had to figure out how to market them. I thought that just came naturally. It has been a real education! It's a tough life, but the most fun I've ever had in my life! I wouldn't trade it with anybody. Well, maybe Mary Higgins Clark or Nora Roberts.....
I learned to use the computer, and now my hubby is really sorry he encouraged me to do that.

THIS YEAR - My 14th book has been published, and they are all selling quite well. I am still writing. I hope to have the 15th one (Old Habits Die Hard, the 3rd Patrick and Grace Mystery) out before the end of the year and the 16th one (Tuesday Nolan, the 2nd Women of the Week series) out early in 2006.

I'm absolutely living my dream life. I hope the rest of the writers in the world can say likewise.

THE FAVORITE PART OF MY LIFE AS A WRITER - When I hear from a reader who says their life has been changed, even in some small way like making them laugh, by the words I have written. That makes it all worthwhile!

Make it a great day. And if you want to see more about my books, go to my website at http://www.janetelainesmith.com .

WOW and me almost memory challenged!
Okay, you asked for it.
Oh, by the way, did I unbecome a Writersville member? No, then why am I not listed as such?
You'll fix it? Great, Doro!
Now, where was I?
Oh, yeah. Well let's see.

10 years ago, I was in Florida, Orlando. No computer, no desire to own one. I mean after all, pc's were the gov. way of keeping tabs on us and spying on what we bought and what our politics were.
I was also hand writing my first novel. I'd write a bit, put it away, drag it out, write a bit more and then one fine spring day. I cleaned out my closet. 'Nuff said.

Five years ago- we'll bypass nine cause it was pretty much a repeat of ten.
Five years ago, I was in TN, my beautiful TN surrounded by mountains. I had a pc, was actively searching for my daughter I placed for adoption thirty years before and had seriously started writing my first novel.
My step sister died of an aortic aneurism and 9-11 happened. A horror I don't ever want to revisit.
I was deeply involved in the adoption issue and in writing groups.

This year. I completed my second novel, (the first having been published three years ago. "What the Heart Wants" can be purchased on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Booksamillion or ordered in any bookstore)
I had eight short stories accepted for publication or released in either anthologies or magazines.
I received my first paying writing gig, secured an agent, and have no less than six books in the works.

The best part of my life as a writer? Writing, of course. Knowing that I have been given a gift of imagination and the ability to weave words into pictures, and knowing that someone really likes what I write. Enough so to pay me for my love.

I only wish I had more time to devote to writing, and wish my agent would let me know what the heck is up with Dark Ridge!!

So, there you have it. If you want to read some excerpts from some of my books, or some of my short stories, check out my website @
